Feedback Friday Feature #6 – Ice Cream Stand

I know, I know, it’s been quite a while since I’ve actually done one of these. Sorry guys D:. In any case though, now that I’ve gotten back into the rhythm of things, you *SHOULD* be able to expect a continuous stream of content… and for me to hopefully stay on schedule. Hopefully.

This week was a bit of a special week for Feedback Friday, its fiftieth iteration. That’s a pretty big number… hard to think it’s almost been running for an entire year. It’s such a fantastic event, a chance for the indie gaming community to come together and check out some neat new indie titles. They get the chance to try a game before it’s “officially” out, and in return they provide valuable feedback based on their experiences with the game to the developer.

One of the games in this week’s edition of Feedback Friday goes by the name of Ice Cream Stand. It’s a game currently in development by a reddit user calling themselves avonwodahs, and is currently available to play for free on the developer’s website.

Ice Cream Stand shares a lot of gameplay elements with similar titles such as Candy Box and Cookie Clicker. Don’t get me wrong, the game *CAN* be interesting, but at the same time it feels a little too same-y to be taken seriously. The art style is nice, better than the two games I mentioned.. but on the other hand, the gameplay is essentially the same.

While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with sharing proven gameplay elements, the consequence of doing so is that you’ve got to figure out a way to make sure your game is still interesting and unique, worth playing. It’s tough to say whether or not Ice Cream Stand really does this. It’s particularly difficult when you consider the kind of game it is. Can you really judge one of the browser-based clicky-clicky games by the same standard you judge regular games? Depends on your perspective, I guess.

One interesting feature Ice Cream Stand does introduce into its core gameplay are trending products. Certain iced-cream flavours are more sought after at certain times than others, and people will pay more for them than they will for the other types.

Other than that though, the game really just feels like more of the same. It’s got non-surprisingly predictable gameplay that starts with the player spam-clicking the iced cream to build up enough money to buy employees to sell the iced cream for them, at which point the game can mostly just be ignored.

Overall, the most important thing for the developer to do at this point is to expand the gameplay. Offer the player something to do beyond collecting money. Candy Box is great at this, allowing the player to complete interesting (and interactive) quests which become easier as you gather materials. It gives the mindless gathering a bit more sense of purpose, something Ice Cream Stand is sorely lacking at this point.

If you’re interested in trying the game for yourself, you can do so by heading on over to the developer’s website. To leave feedback, just head on over to this week’s Feedback Friday thread and respond to the developer’s post!
